English Horse Bits
There are numerous different horse bits for English riding and in the past ten or so year’s new philosophies on the way bits work. However, to simplify English bits primarily fall in the three classes, the snaffle bit, the curb bit and the hackamore.
- The Snaffle bit is the most common applies direct pressure on the bars, tongue and corner of the mouth.
- The Curb bit uses a type of lever called a shank s that puts pressure not only on the mouth, but also on the poll and chin groove. This bit ads a strap, of normally leather or chain behind the bit adding pressure under your horses jaw.. Different added reins can also create more pressure to the bars of the horse’s mouth.
- The Hackamore puts pressure on the poll of the jaw and the nose and does not have a mouth piece.
There are many variations on these three bits including a
- Dee Bits refers to the sides of the bit which are shaped like a “D”, popular for showing. The Dee bit applies some pressure to the sides of the horse’s mouth and come in many sizes.
- Gags Bit is a combination bit based of the snaffle but runs the rein through a set of holes in the side of the bit and creates more pressure on the mouth and poll.
- http://www.marylandsaddlery.com/browse.cfm/2,98.html refers to the sides of the bit which are shaped like a “eggbutt or oval”, popular for horse showing and racing since it is less likely to snag.
- Full Cheeks Bit referees usually to a snaffle with long check pieces. This applies more side pressure
- Elevator Bits consist of a mouthpiece with check or shanks attached to the sides. There is a hole in the top and the bottom of cheek piece to attach the rein.
- Three Ring Bit is similar to the elevation but the cheek pieces consist of rings to attach reins too.
- Combination Bits works to provide exact life, bend and set you and your hose need. The bits come in many variations.
- Loose Ring, move more in the horse’s mouth since the sides are not fixed but move on rings.
- Pelham Bit: is a combination single curb bit with two sets of reins attached to rings at the mouthpiece and end of the shank. Partly combines snaffle and curb pressure to the mouth, the jaw and poll of your horse. Usually used with two reins.
- Kimberwick Bit is hybrid of the Pelham design that uses a slight amount of mild curb leverage with ring cheek piece and you can use of set rein placement on the ring to increase leverage.
- Happy Mouth Bit is either made from a flexible or jointed fairly hard plastic. The sides of the bit can be any of the above mentioned but the mouth section is warmer and softer.
All of these style bits use pressure to one or more of four points on the horses head; the poll, the jaw and the bars and the nose and the tongue. Talk to your Tack Shop and Trainer about what type of bit would be best for you and your horse.
The Myler Bits are the newest and more revolutionary bits to come on the Horse Scene.
The Myler Brothers “created a bit that offered a curved mouthpiece for tongue relief, and is an integral part of the biting system we have today.” Please visit the Myler website http://mylerbitsusa.com/ for more information on Myler. Toklat produces the Myler brand.
