Pony Tack & Supplies
One of the best parts about starting to ride as a child is the ponies. Ponies have a look intelligence and attitude that makes them the comedians of the equestrian world. They can be as sweet and kind to your child as a doll then turn around and be strong and willful when you want to get him or her to do what you want. However, the kindness, understanding and patience they have with children is unsurpassed and makes it worth every moment.
Ponies are classified as being under 14.2 hands, over that height becomes a horse. But under 14.2 hands gives way to small, medium and large ponies, that let your child grow and still enjoy riding a pony. Small ponies are 12.2 hands (4inches) 50 inches (130 cm) and under, medium ponies are over 12.2 but no taller than 13.2 hands 54 inches (140 cm), and large ponies are over 13.2 hands but no taller than 14.2 hands.
Besides the smaller size ponies have thick mains, tails and coats as well as very stocky, thick bones, wide chests, and small heads. Since children and ponies are on the smaller size, equestrian stores not only cater to children’s sizes but the ponies as well! Halters, Bridles, Saddler, In Hand Tack, Bits, buckets, blankets, girths, muzzles etc all come in smaller sizes specifically for your pony! Many of the halters, polos, buckets, leads and accessories come in bright fun colors so you and your pony can stand out and have fun! Remember to make sure your ponies tack and blankets fit correctly for the comfort of your pony and safety of your child.
Grooming your pony, especially to get off that winter coat of at least an inch of fur, can require a shedding blade and of course some elbow grease. The smaller brushes, curries, sponges and buckets make it easier for your child to groom their pony. Also since ponies are a hearty breed they often can not handle the rich green grass of the spring and summer. They must live on less lush fields and feed or sport a muzzle to keep them healthy. When worming or medicating it is important to be aware of the pony’s smaller size and treat accordingly.
There is nothing more adorable or more rewarding then watching your child and their pony together. I would bet that all adult riders that started as children can name one if not more ponies that won their hearts and taught them to love riding!
